New York Times photographer Dith Pran survived the Cambodian killing fields. He dedicated his life to telling the story of the Khmer Rouge’s genocide. Between 1975 & 1979 the Communist Khmer Rouge Regime killed nearly 2,000,000 people in the killing fields of Cambodia. The 1984 Academy Award-winning film The Killing Fields was based on Dith Pran’s life.

I remember reading about him and also about the actor who played him in The Killing Fields, well over a decade ago in Reader’s Digest, of all places. Seeing this interview reminds me, I should watch the film.

Having gotten into music only in the mid-90s, sometimes I want to giggle at all the kiddies now rediscovering grunge etc, because that stuff was nearly dead by then and hardly registered on my tweenage brain at the time.

Britpop, girl bands, boy bands and Gloria Estefan, however….. I’m pretty sure they’re safe from the mitts of currently-teens, at least for now. (they better be). This particular Old just wants to enjoy her long-ago pleasures without being reintroduced to them by the arse end of the hipster rediscovery machine, even if it doesn’t stop me from continuing to love the things that got co-opted anyway (like a young DiCaprio and all the older seasons of Buffy).

I’ve always thought clear plastic macs and umbrellas (yeah, the kind Charlotte carts around in Lost In Translation) look the coolest. On Erin, the coolness is enough to cause a second Ice Age, no joke.

Maybe it’s just my inner football fan coming out (Ajax isn’t just “the local football club”, Sart!) but I’d rather hang with the rowdy sports thugs, they look like they’re having a lot more fun than the beautiful but nonplussed fashion girl who is the ostensible focus of the pic.

In fact I wonder how that pic came to be in the first place, fashion girls and out-and-out football fans aren’t really ever very likely to be in each other’s company.

10/10 but then again I’ve been to law school (I’d be really disappointed in myself if I fucked this up). There’s one question that’s legitimately a “gotcha” for anyone who hasn’t.

The rest I really hope folks figure out before 2012…

Incidentally, civics wasn’t offered in any of the ten schools I attended in grades K-12, which I find appalling. If we’re going to let everyone vote I think it should be mandatory that we teach them about the basic functions of governments…in particular ours.

10/10 here too, though I should probably admit:

a) I was once a law student (I am not, however, American).

b) I had to resort to guesswork on one of them.

2. And wearing the same dress* at the runway presentation in 2004 (via style.com).

Apparently the dress has been well-loved by Karen. She lifted her arm up to reveal a huge tear to Cathy Horyn, who noted that the hem is a tattered mess as well. Karen needs to send some of that McQueen my way, if she don’t know how to love it right.

*I think? Either the color difference is due to the lights, or style.com could be missing a look from the 2004 show.

She also wore it to the Met Gala in 2004 (looking at that pic now actually gives me Gemma-nostalgia), and has clearly loved it to pieces since- I spot acres of missing sequins in the photos from last Sunday. It’s actually a bit funny to contrast the two pics- the lady doesn’t appear to have aged in seven years (gods, was 2004 so long ago?), but her dress clearly has.

In all fairness, if I owned that dress I would be very likely to (like Karen) love it not wisely, but a little too well.

Of all the models-crammed-together themed covers the magazine’s ever done, this one is my favourite (this is only one segment of the foldout, but I love getting to see Kate and Gisele share page space with the other greats- something I don’t think ever happened again, did they each write an “only girl” clause into their contracts or something? Side note: they look so fresh faced!

This was right before she went the route of Total Raunch, funny to see her so fresh-faced and wholesome- and ‘wholesome’ was not a word anyone would have used to describe her image after that point.

Also, it’s funny to think this was probably the first issue they planned after 9/11. Explains a lot about the cover and the flag-heavy editorials inside.
